BCS Financial Forensics Ltd are interested or involved with financial literacy as we prepare forensic reports and witness testimony in support of parties involved in fraud investigations, civil litigation and income tax disputes. We believe if these individuals were more financially literate, these situations wouldn't have been as severe or possible avoided all together.

Credit Aid
Credit Aid (Brian Denysuik)
Creditaid has been helping educate Manitobans for over 25 years with respect to financial literacy. We took the opportunity to become involved with the Manitoba Financial Literacy Forum from the very beginning as the details unfolded with just how much Canadians were lacking when it came to financial literacy. We believe that we can all make a difference and working together with the forum members we have an opportunity and a responsibility to make greater difference for more people. We want Manitoba to be a leader when it comes to financial literacy and we are very proud of the work we have accomplished so far and the direction we are going.
Creditaid meets with consumers on a daily basis. We help Manitobans find solutions to debt problems. This involves teaching consumers how to budget and we help transition them to a save to spend mentality coupled with goal setting. We help young couples learn to manage money as a couple. We work closely with Habitat for Humanity to educate new home owners with respect to budgeting. Creditaid provides on-going counselling for consumers struggling with financial stress and we help transition them back to work from disability programs. We also lecture on financial wellness to help spread the overall financial literacy knowledge across the province.

Certified Financial Planner®
Desjardins Financial Security Investments Inc.
Over the many years that I have held the Certified Financial Planner® designation, I have witnessed the impact that financial literacy (or lack thereof) can have on individuals and families and the financial decisions they make. I have found that limited skills, knowledge, and confidence regarding financial matters spans across all income levels, education levels, level of wealth and age groups. The primary issues or challenges may differ depending upon these different characteristics but the personal impact of these limitations remains the same. Also with increasing complexity of both the income tax structure in Canada and the ever increasing complexity of investment vehicles available, this has added to the challenge for most to remain fully informed and able to make the best decisions possible for their personal situation.
It is because of this perceived need that I am currently one of the co-chairs of the Manitoba Financial Literacy Forum. Also in my workplace at Desjardins Financial Security Investments Inc., in addition to servicing a very select group of clients, I provide educational seminars to our many clients and other organizations on a host of financial literacy topics including the areas of estate planning, financial planning, and investment knowledge.

Dr. Noralou P. Roos
Noralou P. Roos is a professor in the College of Medicine at the University of Manitoba and founding director of both the Manitoba Centre for Health Policy and EvidenceNetwork.ca.
Noralou Roos is a co-director with Dr. Sharon Macdonald of the "Get Your Benefits" project. The project builds on the Poverty Tool developed by Gary Bloch in Ontario, linking health care providers with community groups to work on reducing low income.
The Get Your Benefits initiative provides information and booklets to physicians/health care professionals to encourage them to diagnose and treat poverty by asking every patient about the adequacy of their income and encouraging them to access benefits they are entitled to. For example, filing taxes is one of the most powerful ways of increasing income/defeating poverty: in 2017, $30 million was returned to 9,890 Manitobans earning less than $40,000/year after they filed taxes. This initiative works with physicians, nurses, educators, federal/provincial governments and community agencies to help Manitobans access their benefits and improve their lives.
The Get Your Benefits booklet lists many of the tax credits and benefits available to low income Manitobans. To date, more than 60,000 booklets have been distributed across Manitoba.
Many thanks to the Winnipeg Foundation for providing funding for this project.

Financial Institutions Regulation Branch
Financial Institutions Regulation Branch
Collectively, The Manitoba Securities Commission (MSC) and the Financial Institutions Regulation Branch (FIRB) are a Special Operating Agency (SOA) reporting to the Manitoba Minister of Finance.
FIRB is tasked with regulatory oversight of Manitoba’s insurance industry, credit unions and caisses populaires, cooperatives, and trust and loan companies. Like MSC, FIRB is responsible for fostering development and ensuring integrity in these sectors, while maintaining standards to protect the public and inform consumers.
In a 2017 survey, only half of Manitobans scored better than a D on a list of basic financial questions. Because money touches so many aspects of life, this lack of understanding has a pervasive negative effect on overall quality of life, and indirectly hurts Manitoba’s economy.
Promoting financial literacy is a vital component of our public education efforts. MSC and FIRB provide current, useful, and unbiased information related to saving and investing for people from all walks of life. From information on the differences between RRSPs, TFSAs, and RESPs, or working with a financial adviser to achieve your financial goals; to information on buying or selling a home, or how to establish a housing cooperative in your neighbourhood; we have the resources to help you navigate the financial waters of life.
We are also committed to providing timely information on financial fraud happening in our province or spreading within Canada, and how to protect yourself and your hard earned money from being taken from you…
MSC and FIRB—under the banner of the Manitoba Financial Services Agency—are committed to working collaboratively with the Forum and its members to share information and build capacity among members, with the goal of improving the financial literacy of all Manitobans.

Consolidated Credit Counseling Services of Canada Inc.
Consolidated Credit is the only nationally-registered, non-profit credit counselling organization operating in Canada. When we opened our doors over 10 years ago we knew financial literacy supports in Canada were lacking as consumer debt levels rose year over year. That's why our Community Outreach Department invests significant resources and countless hours providing free financial literacy to communities across Canada. We teach Canadians how to better manage their money and put an end to the debt problems and financial crises that far too many individuals and families wrestle with daily.
Each year we deliver over 200 educational workshops covering 30 different financial topics. Our free financial literacy and budgeting workbooks are always a hit. They give people a place to put pencil to paper so they can start telling their money where to go and stop wondering where it went. And for those on the go, our online platforms provide access to certified financial counsellors, interactive webinars, and a host of financial content and tools.
When someone connects with a counsellor, they'll work together to establish a workable budget while making suggestions on areas of savings or obvious overspending. If a mounting debt is an issue, counsellors will verify the amounts on their credit report and recommend strategies for debt repayment based on their situation.
Becoming a member of the Manitoba Financial Literacy Forum is an honour and it is our hope that Manitobans will lead the way for financial literacy in Canada.
